Preparing Your Longmont Roof for Snow and Ice

Longmont winters bring snow, freezing nights and sunny afternoons, sometimes all in the same week. That freeze-and-thaw cycle is one of the hardest things on a roof. A little preparation in the fall can save you from leaks in the middle of winter.

Watch out for ice dams

Ice dams form when heat from your home melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the colder edges. The ice builds up and can force water under your shingles and into your walls or ceilings.

How to prepare before winter

  • Clear gutters of leaves so meltwater can drain

  • Check attic insulation and ventilation to keep the roof deck cold and even

  • Repair loose or missing shingles before the first snow

  • Seal gaps in flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights

  • Trim branches that could break under heavy snow

During winter

If you see large icicles or water stains on ceilings near exterior walls, call a professional. Avoid chipping ice off the roof yourself, since it's easy to damage shingles and dangerous to work on a slick surface.

If a winter storm causes an emergency leak, you can reach our owner directly around the clock.
